Minecraft Kids

“Minecraft Kids” is a poem about longing for what I couldn’t have. Video of poem being read aloud in the Spoken Word section of this website. I found this poem in an old notebook, so the date it was written is unknown. Most likely originally written in late 2020.

I don’t understand

How some people

When they’re fourteen

Are playing Minecraft,

Watching YouTube videos

While others are slitting their wrists,

Charging money for head

Because they can’t afford

All of their addictions,

And they get to this point

Where they’re no longer sure

What the difference is

Between trying to get higher

Than they’ve ever been before,

And a suicide attempt,

But either way

They’re doing just that,

Twice a week

Just waiting for dear ol’ Grim Reaper

To show up at their doorstep

And knock on their eyelids,

They hope that he’ll pry their eyes open,

Just to seal them shut,

And pronounce them dead.

I’m not mad

At the Minecraft kids,

I’m just mad

That I couldn’t be one of them.
